East coast animals (part 9)

The most memorable mammal I saw this summer was a porcupine. I saw two on opposites sides of the road at sunset chomping on grass. The one in this photo was an older, more tolerant porcupine and taking photos of it reminded me of a skunk. Its head was barely visible most of the time with an occasional peek up when shifting chomping positions. Are all porcupines usually that chill? I’d love to hear more about them from y’all!

East coast animals (part 6)

The first time I saw waxwings I was amazed at how small they were. Having seen photos of them I’d always thought they were much larger so maybe I have seen many and just not noticed. Anyhow, the day I arrived in CT this lovely couple greeted me by hanging out in my parents fountain for a bit. I thought they were beyond cute. I saw a bunch more throughout the two weeks I was there but they were sadly always quite far away.

East coast animals (part 5)

Next up we’ve got a family of loons from the summer. A hiker we started talking with mentioned they’d seen a family “down the street” at a nearby lake so I thought why not check it out! To my excitement I saw them fairly close to shore and was able to capture the adult catching bugs and feeding its young. I rarely see loons so it was a real treat to spend a short while with them. Maybe next time I’ll see the littles hitching a ride with their parent ❤️

East coast animals (part 3)

Some rangers at the park were kind enough to inform me about a Barred Owl family and I was able to see my first owlets of this species. Here are some photos of two of them goofing around, looking for prey, and getting used to their new surroundings. I’m sure the adults were near but they did a great job staying out of sight. The owlets gave themselves away by calling to their parents for food given it was approaching dusk.

Island Foxes (part 6)

Here are a few more of my favorites. The first fox was hunting insects and rodents up in the bluffs. I was fortunate to stumble upon it and capture it traversing a steep cliff over the ocean. Sadly it was so foggy the water cannot be seen. The other two shots are from dusk when two youngsters were playing down in the campground.

This first shot was another favorite. The fox took a big midday yawn before patrolling the campground for leftovers. I learned from a naturalist that the island fox food preference is actually in reverse order to the mainland fox. They go for berries, then insects, and small rodents last. Who knew?!!?!

So my questions to you all is…should I keep posting more fox pics or move onto something else?

Island Foxes (part 1)

Spring break was filled with a visit to a few mammal spots, but the main attraction was the Island Fox. I felt rushed on the one and only day trip I took to see them, so this time I was able to camp overnight and see them in a wider assortment of environments.

To kick off this series, here are some shots of one waking towards me from the first evening. It was such a pleasure watching it snack on bugs and mark its territory as it walked down a corridor of Scorpion Canyon.

Bobcats on rocks (part 5)

Here are a few more rock shots where she again successfully hopped from a rock to catch a gopher. She was listening for a while and upon hearing something stealthily got down lower to the prey. Such a treat seeing her hunt successfully from these perches!

Here are some photos of “Roberta” patiently waiting to lock on to exactly where the gopher is. She stayed in this position for at least 20 minutes while listening attentively for sounds in the brush. She would close her eyes, listen and give me a glance from time to time. Ultimately she successfully lept to victorious meal that she gobble up quickly.

As it approached blue hour this female bobcat kept hunting along the rocks. She had successfully caught a gopher from a long leap and proceeded down the hill where I caught some of my favorite shots that day. Bobcats on rocks (part 1) I have seen a lot of bo

Bobcats on rocks (part 1)

I have seen a lot of bobcats over the past few years, but rarely do I get to hang out with one in the hills and photograph them in such a scenic area. This local cat was spotted hunting down closer to the trails and proceeded to venture into the hills. We decided to follow at a good distance so as to not interrupt her hunting and she proceeded all the way to the top of the ridge. From there my buddy left as we lost her in the brush. Knowing she might pop back out to hunt again I waited patiently.

Eventually I found her napping at the edge of the brush and she then went off to galavant along the ridge. This led to a wide variety of shots I’d never imagined and even led to video footage of her successfully hunting from the rocks by jumping on the prey.

I’ll be posting a few of my favorite shots from this experience over the next few days and hopefully post that footage as well soon. I hope you enjoy seeing these as much as I did walking with her way up there!

For my final round of coyote images I decided to post both color and black and white. I find this fitting because as much as I’d like to think many of our environmental problems are black and white, the truth is the solutions are shrouded in many palettes of color.

I found it adorable how they playfully strolled through the orchard while being distracted by a variety of sights and smells. Coyote Awareness Week (part 1)

In celebration of Project Coyote’s first annual “Coyote Awareness Week”, I thought it would be appropriate share a few images from a recent visit to a rural environment in the delta. I spotted three healthy coyotes in an almond grove and was ecstatic because it was the first mammals I had seen in days. Watching them play, hunt, and rest in the fields made me realize what an important role they play in such multi-species communities. Not only do they help manage rodent populations, but they also limit mesocarnivore populations which increases bird diversity and abundance.

This was by far one of the major highlights of the trip. I’ve been wanting to see a short eared owl all year and even though it didn’t come very close, I was still able to snap some nice landscape shots that even included a rainbow! Although I didn’t see them for very long the eagles made an unforgettable impression a few weeks ago. I was walking away from checking out a Merlin when I heard a ruckus behind me. Low and behold there were two eagles squabbling over something and it was too late to get any good shots. Thankfully at least one of them came back for a quick fly by before I had to leave! The last bald eagle was at a different location and perched above a river. Sadly I couldn’t get any closer to it, but thought it made a neat wide angle shot.

As I was leaving from visiting the cranes I couldn’t help but notice this kingfisher in decent light. Not only did it pose for me a bit on a metal perch close to the road, but also in some walnuts trees which was a first for me. I finally made it to a spot to see the Sandhill cranes even though it’s late in the season. At first they were super far out and the heat haze was miserable. After a few other avian distractions I heard a cacophony of sounds in the distance. Lucky for me a large flock of them ended up in better light and closer proximity. It was not only a joy to photograph them, but to also listen to their auditory antics!

Some recent birds (part 3)…Red-Tailed Hawk

This was a pretty fascinating sighting along side the road. I saw the hawk from afar land with something in its talons and by the time I got there it had begun consuming the garter snake. I chose this image in particular because the name almost looks like its tongue and if you look closely you can see its nictitating membrane beginning to shut.

While out on “assignment” with conservationskids.org, led by @danieldietrichphoto , I was stopped by one of the parents who pointed out this lovely tree frog. He had spotted about 3-4 on our walk and it reminded me of all the amazing smaller creatures I miss most of the time. Although this series was about zooming out, I find it ironic that I actually had to zoom in my “scoping” skills for this one! I think @subhajoshiphotography was able to capture an even better photo of both this frog and the hummingbird hawk-moths.

I often seen a kingfisher near my local skatepark and one day it was sticking around long enough to snap a few photos after the session. It’s generally positioned far away from any path so I saw it as an opportunity to go for a more environmental shot. In the background you can see Mt. Tamalpais so I suspect you can guess its approximate location for those that live in the area.

I figure I’d post an egret at sunrise flying over a lagoon since it was a peaceful moment while out looking for mammals. I noticed recently that egrets often line the shore where otters are hunting for fish. It makes a lot of sense for the birds if the fish are fleeing from the otters toward the shore. I love how animals find ways to work less and eat more!

I took a stroll to the beach while down in Southern California during Thanksgiving and a spider caught my eye. It was dangling by a single thread and I used the urban backdrop to create some abstract bokeh with my macro lens. I find it fascinating how much silk the spider had close to its body ready to deploy to other objects.

Shortly after the two group of otters disbanded one of the families cruised around the corner to do some preening and relaxing. Here are some shots from the mom and two pups drying off and chilling for a bit. I was astonished by how little they sit still and I think at one point they are stopped moving for maybe a total of 30 seconds.

After spending some time with an otter family on the beach, another group of otters came to join and took a brief break from fishing. I managed to capture a total of 6 in one frame, although I believe there was a total of 8-9 altogether. So fun watching them interact playfully and the abundance of wildlife within their ecosystem.

This young female bobcat was “hiding” next to a cypress tree while debating its next move. After some glances from us humans, she proceeded down the path to hunt while we followed at a safe distance. She eventually disappeared into some thick coyote brush to hunt rabbits.

It is always a treat to see this cat who I’ve been photographing for a number of years. She is pretty mellow and can be found often hunting rabbits and gophers next to the trail. This first shot is of her peak height as she jumped into a shrub. Sadly she did not come out with a meal, but was not discouraged and kept hunting!

Juvenile Hawk Pants (part 1)…

On my usual mission to find some mammals I came across some juvenile red-tailed hawks. The antics that ensued was mesmerizing. They were so entertained by each other, pieces of tanbark, freshly cut grass and their pant legs. Two of them bickered about who had the freshest look that day and I think skinny jeans won by a narrow margin. You can see the disgruntled siblings cursing the other in the first picture.

More bobcat kittens from last summer! (Part 1)…

I got a tip from my buddy that one of my favorite bobcats had some kittens. I raced out there the next morning and was fortunate enough to see the two kittens and mom (aka Roberta) hanging out by a cypress tree. I was able to spend some quality time with them, watching the kittens climb, play and listen to mom when she wanted their attention. It was such a treat and a wonderful was to end the summer.

Over the next couple days I’ll be posting some photos from another day I saw them denning in the shrubs. This first shot is of Daisy watching me while mom was busy cooling off in the shade. All of these photos were shot with a macro lens given the low light situation in the shrubs.

Here are a couple of individual shots of the owls from the other day. These were taken in the morning and they perched in a low hanging branch of a pine tree. Both were very curiously watching the adult hunt wood rats in some fallen trees. Sadly the crows came and harassed them which disturbed the hunt temporarily.

Here are some more photos of the whole family. The first photo is an absolute favorite and the others are just more from that same lucky day. A friend and I later named the kittens “Spencer” and “Daisy”. Spencer was the runt and much more timid while Daisy was generally more fearless and out in the open more often. I can only hope both kids ended up making it on their own and ventured off to find their own territory!

The kittens spent time chasing around each other at the bottom of the tree and eventually this one settled on playing “king of the mountain”. Many months ago I was lucky enough to see my first bobcat family in action. I rolled up to a bend in the trail and to my disbelief the kittens were playing while mom was hunting lackadaisically. It was such a treat to see the youngsters and hear the unique commands the mom would make signifying to wait or follow.
